They stop using skills and looking at the auto attack damage it seems that the skeletons freeze up completely.

if this happens only after you ressed your pet some times already, it might be a unknown version of the pet/ghost glitch

They never start using skills again before you get into compass range. I'm thinking it's something similar to triggering patrols by going into compass range of the mobs.
That's why I'm thinking that the AI simply unloads because there are no players in party range.
